Dentures

Dentures can replace your missing teeth and improve your quality of life. They can be made to look like your natural teeth, and with practice, will allow you to eat and speak easier.

Caring for your new smile:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to get used to your dentures.

  • Eat a balanced diet for good health.

  • Practice eating and speaking.

  • See our office regularly.

Make an appointment at our office if your dentures crack, break, chip, of if any part of the denture comes loose.

The normal lifetime of dentures is about 5 to 10 years, but this can vary widely depending on the patient. In time, your dentures may need relining, rebasing, or replacing. This is due to daily wear and changes to your gum tissues and bone as you age.

Relining is when we add new material to the underside of the denture base to fit to your gums.

Rebasing is when a new base is made using your old denture as a model.

Types of Dentures:

Conventional Complete Dentures:

Made and placed in your mouth after the teeth are taken out and the tissues have healed. The framework of the complete denture, called the base, is normally made of plastic that closely matches the color of your gums.

Immediate Dentures:

Some patients may have the option to get immediate dentures. For these, the denture is made before the remaining teeth are removed. Once the denture has been made at the lab, we remove the teeth at the next visit and the denture is placed right away. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to go without teeth during the healing time.

Caring for Dentures:

  • Dentures are very delicate and may break if dropped. When handling your dentures, stand over a folded towel or sink filled with cool water.

  • Brush each day to remove food deposits and plaque, and to help keep stains from forming.

  • It is best to use a special brush made for cleaning dentures, but you can use a toothbrush with soft bristles.

  • To clean the denture, take it out of your mouth and rinse off loose particles. Wet the brush and put the cleanser on it. Brush gently.

  • Do not let your dentures dry out or they may lose their shape. When you are not wearing them, put them in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water.

Removable Partial Dentures

A removable partial denture may be a solution to replace your missing teeth. These will help you chew food, speak better, and can support your checks and lips so the face does not sage and make you look older.

Removable partial dentures usually have replacement teeth fixed to a plastic base that closely matches the color of your gums. A metal framework connects the teeth and the base. They may attach to your natural teeth with metal clasps.

In special cases, we may build a part called a precision attachment into the crown (a “cap” that covers the tooth). This attaches the denture directly to the surrounding teeth. With or without precision attachments, crowns on your natural teeth may improve the way a removable partial denture fits your mouth.

Adjustments

Your mouth naturally changes as you age, which can affect the fit of your denture. Your bone ridges can shrink, making a space under the denture. If your denture needs adjusting, do not adjust it yourself because you can harm both the denture and your health. See us as soon as possible if your removable partial denture breaks, cracks, chips, or if one of the teeth becomes loose.
